Through this years hectic NBA Free Agency, the Houston Rockets have been a team everyone has mentioned and questioned. The Rockets and GM Daryl Morey seem to be looking for the final All Star to team-up alongside Dwight Howard and James Harden. Their own Rocket Man.
So far this Free Agency, the Rockets have missed out on their primary target, Chris Bosh, and have let Chandler Parsons leave to go to Dallas. Although they did sign Trevor Ariza to a 4 year, $32 million dollar contract, Parsons and Ariza have a very small margin of difference in skill, and Parsons has much more potential. In the chaos of LeBron's "Decision 2.0", the Rockets were prepared to bring in All-Star forward Chris Bosh, but missed out on him once Miami offered him a maximum contract, making him the second highest paid in the NBA. The Rockets were so prepared for Bosh coming to Houston that they traded Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik, both so they could clear cap space, to the Los Angeles Lakers and New Orleans Pelicans, respectively, BEFORE BOSH EVEN SIGNED WITH THEM!
Then, there are also rumors swirling around the league that the Rockets are interested in trading for Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo. This rumor appeared at the trade deadline last year and has yet again resurfaced. The Rockets desperately need a point guard that is able to distribute, but what do they have to offer the Celtics in return for their lone All-Star? Nothing. The only player the Celtics might have had any interest in was big man Omer Asik, but he was just traded. The chances of the Rockets landing Rajon Rondo are slim to none, but would it even help their team?
The clear weakness on the Rockets roster, in my point of view, is their bench. Houston had the 26th worst bench in the entire league (2nd worst in the Western Conference) at 27.5 points per game. That is abysmal. The Rockets don't need another All-Star player or their "Rocket Man", they need to create depth on their roster, and losing bench players Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik was not a good start to that. Although they were both getting paid an obscene amount, they were both quality players that improved their bench (however much they disliked their roles on the team).
